Roof run-off from valley flashing or kick out flashing, causing ground erosion and washout. Is gutter system or rain diversion system required?

Hi Richard,

If the overhand is less than 6 inches extension from the side of the house, then a gutter is required.

When a gutter is installed, all water discharging from the gutter is required to discharge a minimum of 12 inches from the foundation (edge of the slab), which includes all overflowing gutter discharge water.

From the 2004 Florida Building Code, Residential, with 2006 Revisions. (underlining and bold are mine)
- R320.7 Protection against decay and termites.
- - Condensate lines and roof downspouts shall discharge at least 1 foot (305 mm) away from the structure sidewall, whether by underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Gutters with downspouts are required on all buildings with eaves of less than 6 inches (152 mm) horizontal projection except for gable end rakes or on a roof above another roof.
