structural steel column loads

Can a structural steel column-and-baseplate be supported on a wooden bearing surface ? My intuition sayes NO, but I can't "prove it".

Yes ... but ...

As long as the load was within the load supporting capabilities and rating of the species of wood and its orientation (grain-wise parallel with or perpendicular to) the load.

It would be easier and safer (meaning less chance for error) to just use steel bearing plates
