Electrical Panel Mechanical - New Mexico

Electrical Panel Mechanical - New Mexico

New postby Builder on Mon Oct 03, 2011 9:39 am

Dear Codeman ... We recently had some remodel work done at our home. We hired a general contractor to oversee the work. He hired an electrician to provide electrical work in support of the project which included usual items: moving of switches, addition of GFIs where needed, wiring of ventilation fans, and installation of lighting/recessed and other. In the process the panel needed to be upgraded as it was "not grounded" and the breakers "doubled up" and needed to be expanded for future remodel of the kitchen. It has come to our attention that the electrical work was not permitted or inspected. Gen Contractor said "not necessary". Is this true? We are in New Mexico.

This is the same situation with mechanical; furnace replaced, gas disconnected and reconnected. Not permitted or inspected. The furnace was installed within a small closet constructed on the exterior of the home. Is it within the code to place furnace in an enclosed structure?

Thanks for any advice.

New Mexico has adopted the ICC codes, rather, codes based on the ICC codes:

After reviewing the above, go here:

You will want to check with your local building department to find out about permits and inspections, here are a couple of web sites for major cities in New Mexico (you did not give your location other than 'New Mexico'):
- http://www.santafenm.gov/index.aspx?nid=1297

Contact your local building department to find out about permits and inspections, and the latest code they are using and any amendments and changes made to the model code which was adopted.
