Hi Jerry,
During a recent inspection I saw an emergency generator transfer switch box and installation that looked original, same manufacture and faded color (1989) but it was not an automatic version.
Do you know when the NEC required transfer switches for backup generators to be automatic?

It think the answer to your question lies in the use of the proper terms.

You are, I suspect, not really referring to "emergency power", but instead you are referring to "optional standby power", such as for dwelling units (optional standby power), versus, say for a hospital (emergency power).

"Optional standby power" systems are not required and therefore do not require an automatic transfer switch.
